Toki Suntory Whisky, Japan
Waitrose, From £28

Suntory Toki – meaning “time” in Japanese – is a modern blended whisky built from Suntory’s lighter malt and grain components, designed to fit contemporary drinking habits whether enjoyed neat, over ice, or in the classic Japanese highball. It draws from three prestigious distilleries: HakushuYamazaki, and Chita. Fourth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo made the inspired choice to anchor the blend around Hakushu American white oak cask malt – prized for its freshness and green apple notes — complemented by Chita heavy-type grain whisky, which adds a clean sweetness and vanilla character. On the nose it’s bright and immediately friendly – fresh green apple and lemon peel jump out first, followed by white grape and a soft floral lift, with a gentle sweetness of honey and vanilla underneath. The finish is smooth and medium-length, leaving fruit and raisin notes with vanilla and oak, and a lingering white pepper spice on the tail end. The texture is light but not watery, making it ideal for those still learning how to pick flavours apart. At 43% ABV and available at Waitrose from £28, at a time when Japanese whisky is often spoken about in hushed, reverent tones with prices creeping ever upward, Suntory Toki exists to counter that narrative making it one of the most accessible and enjoyable entry points into the world of Japanese whisky.

About Saturday Kitchen Wines

Saturday Kitchen is the highly popular weekly BBC cooking show where chefs make delicious dishes of food and wine-experts present paired wines.

The show’s wine experts, including Ollie Smith and Helen McGinn, carefully select wines that complement each dish. They help viewers explore great wines at different price points. Our page collects all these featured wines in one place, including tasting notes, origin, price, and recipe pairings.

Why Follow These Recommendations

The wines on Saturday Kitchen? Spot on every time for what they’re cooking that week. Grab one of their picks and you’re basically nailing dinner at home, no second-guessing. Crisp white with seafood. Robust red for lamb. Bubbles when you need to celebrate. This list hands you the right bottle, whatever the meal. I learned this the hard way once – bought a random “decent red” for roast instead of their pick. Disaster. Never again. Here’s where it might go wrong: that exact bottle sells out fast. Grab something close in style instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wine was on Saturday Kitchen today? We do our best to have the latest wine featured listed at the top of our page, with tasting notes and paired recipe links.

Where can I buy these wines? Most wines come for UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Lidl etc. but you’ll see a lot from Majestic Wines too. Each wine shows where it was bought and the price on the date the show aired.

Are these recommendations updated weekly? Yes, we update the page after every episode to include the most recent wine recommendations and recipes.

Meet the Wine Experts

Saturday Kitchen features several expert wine presenters. Ollie Smith is known for his great tasting notes and value picks, while Helen McGinn highlights hidden gems and seasonal wines.

Olly Smith is a bubbly British wine expert, TV star on Saturday Kitchen, and author who’s been charming audiences for 20 years. He writes for Decanter, co-hosts Three Wine Men, and runs Glass House wine bars on P&O Cruises. Won Wine Idol in 2005 after ditching screenwriting.

Helen McGinn spent nearly a decade sourcing wines for Tesco, gaining a deep understanding of buying strategy, pricing, quality control and global supply chains. Helen created The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club, which grew into a bestselling book and established her as one of the UK’s most relatable wine voices.

Seasonal Pairing Tips

Some wines work best for certain seasons. Light, citrusy whites are ideal for spring and summer dishes, while rich reds shine in winter recipes. Following these tips alongside Saturday Kitchen wine recommendations helps you make better pairing choices and enjoy each dish at its best.
